Staying Connected: Why My Role at PLTI-KC Matters
When I think about what makes the Parent Leadership Training Institute Kansas City (PLTI-KC) unique, one word comes to mind: connection. PLTI-KC is not just a 21-week program; it’s a movement built on relationships, both within the program and beyond. My role as the Senior Advisor for Civic Leadership was created to ensure those connections stay strong, even after the graduation celebrations are over.
Why My Role Was Created
The vision behind my role is simple yet powerful: to make sure that the momentum and progress participants experience during the program don’t stop when it ends. Leadership (and leadership development) is not a one-and-done type of thing —it’s an ongoing journey, and having someone there to guide, coach, and cheer you on makes all the difference.
From helping parents get seats on boards and commissions to guiding them through their community projects, my job is to ensure that PLTI parent leaders feel supported and equipped for success. That means updating resumes, sharpening skills, and providing tailored one-on-one coaching to help them step confidently into leadership roles.
Building Community Relationships
Another part of my work is building connections with the people who hold the keys to leadership opportunities—the gatekeepers of boards and commissions. These relationships are vital because they help open doors for PLTI parent leaders, ensuring that their voices and perspectives are heard in spaces where decisions are made.
One of the highlights of our relationship-building efforts is Civic Networking Night, an invite-only annual experience where civic leaders come together to connect with PLTI parent leaders. This event is designed to foster meaningful conversations, create valuable connections, and celebrate the ongoing leadership journey of our participants. By bringing together current and emerging leaders, we create opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and the sharing of ideas.
Why Staying Connected Matters
One of the most important (and fun) aspects of my role is staying in touch with PLTI alumni. After all, leadership doesn’t stop when the program ends—it’s just the beginning! Each month, I reach out to alumni to check in, provide encouragement, and offer support as they take on new challenges, or continue to navigate their community projects. These conversations often go beyond surface-level updates, diving into ideas and strategies for tackling real community issues!
By maintaining these relationships, we create a ripple effect of impact, parent leaders stay inspired and connected, and they, in turn, inspire others in their communities. This ongoing support is what makes PLTI-KC so much more than a training program—it’s a lasting network of leaders.
Looking Ahead
The work we’re doing at PLTI-KC is making a real difference. We’re more than just a program—we’re a community of leaders committed to creating lasting change. But we can’t do it alone! To continue this important work, we need the support of people like you!
Whether through financial contributions, offering space for our parent leaders at decision-making tables, or simply taking the time to learn more about what I do, your support matters.
If you’re ready to get involved, I’d love to connect. Let’s work together to build a brighter future for our neighborhoods and beyond.
